It is in this context that Professor Jacques Marescaux had the idea of creating a unique research and training institute. In 1994, IRCAD opened its doors within the University Hospitals of Strasbourg.

In April 2007, the development of concepts and instruments enabled the IRCAD team to perform the first transluminal endoscopic surgery through natural orifices (NOTES surgery), a world first representing a considerable advance in the world of surgery.

The military hospital, Professor Marion, which was inaugurated on October 14, 1938 and began its functions on January 1, 1939.

In July 1935, Trujillo, who was getting married, brought in one of the most famous urologists of the time, Dr. Georges Jean Baptiste Marion, who was a great French surgeon, to solve a problem for him. Marión remained at the presidential mansion and there, in a three-step surgical process, several days apart, Trujillo's urination was normalized. In gratitude, Trujillo showered Marion with honors. He stayed two months in the country, gave courses at the university, was decorated with the order of Juan Pablo Duarte and was invested as doctor honoris causa by the University of Santo Domingo.

Three years later, in September 1938, the illustrious French surgeon returned to the country, invited by Trujillo, to attend the inauguration of the military hospital that bears his name. The imposing and well-equipped Marion Hospital, visible from Independencia Avenue when completed, was inaugurated on October 14, 1938.
